It’s a thinking job, where you spend most of your day helping others, and providing needed support to patients who rely on you for help. But what exactly are their job description, and what kind of salary can you expect if you go in that field?

A psychologist is someone who helps others by listening to their problems, asking the right questions, and coming up with a diagnostic as to what is wrong and how to fix them. There’s many different kinds of psychologists, some of which work in private clinics, others that work with students in schools, and then there’s those who work in mental hospitals, or as part of the justice system.

Clinical psychology is a field where the professionals typically work out of an office, in a client or hospital, and see patients every day who come to them for help. Their office typically have a large desk, with a leather sofa where patients can relax and start telling the professional what’s on their mind. Then, through their experience and skills, the psychologist then evaluates the condition of their client and finds out the right course of action.

All of this requires intense listening and analytic skills. A clinical psychologist must be able to remain attentive to his client the whole time, and quickly discern patterns that would hint at what’s wrong. Then, they must be able to find the right questions that would bring that person into saying what you need to hear to help them.

Those skills are partly learned, and also partly instinctual, where you need to be good at that sort of thing, or any training you go through won’t be enough to make you good at this job. Still, training is obviously a big part of becoming a clinical psychologist, and also affects clinical psychology salary as well.

The training phase can last a couple of years, since you would be expected to get a college degree before you can practice this job. This will often last 3 to 4 years, and involve learning how to listen and analyze conditions correctly. Then, you would go through an internship, before finally being able to practice that career. A salary for a starting professional is often around $40,000 and can go up to $100,000 when you have enough experience.

Clinical psychology is the most popular type of psychologist, and the most in demand too. The responsibilities are great, because you hold people’s mental well-being in your hands, but the salary is also quite interesting, and skilled workers manage to do quite well in this industry.
